Finding a favourite watering hole
July 23rd, 2008 Posted in Day to Day, Social MediaI’m frequently overwhelmed by all the social network/media that is available and I know I’m not the only one. I’ve joined a lot of them and I’m perpetually trying to sort it all out. Even as I try and tackle this mighty task, more and more online apps and networks keep popping up. Some are really cool, some are a little redundant, but all of them have their uses/target markets.
I recently came to the conclusion that the networks you join should be based on your online goals/needs. Everyone has a different reason for being online and, because there are so many different communities and/or conversations, it makes it easier to decide where you want to hang out if you know what you’re looking for.

I’d compare it to finding a favourite bar or restaurant. The decision isn’t just based on the food, but is also based on people, atmosphere, beverage selection, service, location, and amount of time you are willing/able to commit.
I guess what it comes down to for me is if I am going to hang out in the same place every day for the next few years it needs to keep me interested/cater to my interests. If it doesn’t, I probably shouldn’t have joined in the first place.
